Scinetific and research activity

2000-2003
E-learning technologies

Experimentation of network and multimedia technologies for interactive e-learning, mainly through european research projects within European Union Framework Programmes.

The EASEL (2000-2002) Project specifically addressed two of the concerns expressed in the EC white paper 'Teaching and Learning: Towards the Learning Society:
1. Virtual mobility and uses of new information and communication technologies.
2. Development of innovation through pilot projects based on transnational partnerships.
The objectives of the project were to establish how learning objectives exploiting pedagogical adaption can be integrated with existing metadata schemas and the emerging Question and Test specification from IMS, to gauge the effectiveness and feasibility of utilizing RDF and Sematic Registry in supporting a remote cross metadata searching of online resources. EASEL has also developed a course constructor kit.

The GUARDIANS (2001-2003) project has identified the technology for the next generation of Information Management tools and specify how the required infrastructure will allow distributed components to interwork. Information Management in this context encompasses:
Rich, diverse and interactive content drawn from both web resources intended to be delivered over the Internet and interactive digital broadcast content; Metadata describing these diverse resources; User profiles describing user preferences, both on content and access configuration; Information Object Agent technology capable of comparing resources and their metadata descriptions to identify related materials; Distributed software technology for dynamic management and update of metadata, with specific reference to problems related to availability and accessibility of multimedia resources. The GUARDIANS project was built upon the results generated by the GESTALT project in the 4th Framework ACTS Programme. GESTALT defined a flexible, component-based architecture for the discovery and delivery of modular training and education services. GUARDIANS has extended this architecture utilising various emerging technologies. The focus was to expand from a purely learning/training domain to encompass more generic Information Management issues.

The ELeA project (2002) – Environment for Learning and Assessment –aims to create an easy to use tool for students’ assessment. The system offered a visual web based tool for on-line assessment (fill in blank and multiple choice tests) and correction.

ELASIS project (2002-2003) – Consulting activity for ELASIS (FIAT group) for the analysis and design of an advanced architecture for e-learning. In particular for the creation of a Learning Object Architecture for e-learning services and integration of advanced learning paths.

2003-2006
Mobile Computing

The research on ubiquitous computing, context awareness, context adaptation and personalization for the mobile Internet has been carried mainly through the WEB MINDS (Wide-scalE, Broadband, MIddleware for Network Distributed Services) project, as the main activity of the FIRB project.

2005-2006
Content Management Systems

Analysis and implementation of Content Management Systems for CINI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l’Informatica).
Comparison among commercial and open source solutions with particular attention to integrating CMSs with existing services and network infrastructures.
